HENSCHKE - Tappa Pass Shiraz 2004 75cl Bottle

Very deep crimson in colour. The nose is concentrated and complex, with sweet lifted ripe aromas of spicy blackberries, blueberries and prunes, with hints of chocolate, anise and tar. The palate is sweet, ripe and lush, concentrated and complex, with intense blackberry fruits, plum, anise, cedar and tar.

The texture is fleshy with silky layered tannins, excellent balance and great length. The average winter rainfall this season was a welcome relief after 2003’s fourth-worst drought in history. A relatively frost-free, wet warm and thundery spring followed, creating a natural ‘greenhouse’ effect.

The vines grew vigorously, flowered and in general set a large crop. December was the hottest for 10 years, however at the start of 2004 the weather became mild and windy and...

HENSCHKE - Keyneton Estate Euphonium 2004 75cl Bottle

The Barossa hills village of Keyneton was pioneered by pastoralist Joseph Keynes in 1842. It became a musical and cultural focus for early settlers, such as the Henschke Family Brass Band and the Henschke Winery. This brass band survived generations and featured wonderful wind instruments such as a B flat euphonium, cornet and E flat clarinet, which have been restored and are still in the family.

The historic Keyneton district has been the home of up to seven wineries during its period of settlement. The EuphoniumThe B flat euphonium, a large brass wind instrument, was made by the famous Zimmermann factory in Leipzig, Germany, in the late 19th Century. A musical entrepreneur, Carl Engel of Adelaide, was responsible for importing musical instruments into South Australia at this time. It...

HENSCHKE - Johanns Garden 2006 75cl Bottle

Bright crimson in colour. Sweet ripe lifted spicy aromas of cherry plum, raspberry, rhubarb and anise. Hints of spicy nutmeg, clove and mace with smoky cedar nuances.

The palate is rich and full with supple layered fleshy texture and ripe sweet plum/ prune flavours; concentrated and complex with layers of velvety tannins, good balance, weight and length. Named as a tribute to the early Barossa Lutheran pioneers, many of whom carried the first name of Johann. Their toil, perseverance and conservatism in hardship has meant that the many generations that followed rejoiced in the riches of their prudent efforts.

Barossa growers traditionally referred to their vineyard as their garden. This blend is just one of those blessings. The traditions and culture have survived to this day including the...

HENSCHKE - Henrys Seven 2006 75cl Bottle

The shiraz, grenache, mourvèdre, viognier blend is a tribute to Henry Evans who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. He quickly developed a reputation for producing the best wines in the southern colony. Following Henry’s death in 1868 his widow Sarah exercised her temperance convictions by closing the winery and uprooting all the winegrapes.

This blend highlights the historical introduction of southern French and Spanish varieties to South Australia in those early pioneering days and reflects the history, religion and culture of the Barossa. The 2006 vintage shaped up as another high quality year but with only average yields in the Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills. After a late break in mid June 2005, winter and spring rains were some of the best for...

HENSCHKE - Giles Pinot Noir 2006 75cl Bottle

Pale crimson ruby in colour. Lifted aromas of sweet, fragrant, spicy cherries and cream with vanilla, toasted cashews, tomato stem and sappy hints. The soft and juicy, supple, layered palate is medium weight and shows sweet strawberry/ cherry fruits, delicate structure and fine tighter-style velvety tannins finishing with good length.

Excellent to Exceptional white vintage with below average yields. Matured on lees in 40% new and 60% used French barriques for 9 months prior to blending and bottling. Stephen and Prue Henschke, fifth-generation winemakers at Kkeyneton, selected Lenswood in 1981 to pioneer a new vineyard site, just 50km from their ancient Mount Eedelstone and Hill of Grace vineyards.

At 570m, the Lenswood vineyard slopes offer not only beautiful views towards the older...
