Crocus

The flowers on this small crocus can vary from pale slivery lilac to reddish purple, but whatever the colour, it is always a welcome sight in late winter. This is one of the easiest crocuses to naturalise as it will self-seed readily. A good companion for dwarf grasses - or lawns that have had a trim late in the autumn - so the flowers can be better seen.

It is more tolerant of shade than many of its counterparts, so is a good choice for woodland areas. It will also be a magnet for whatever insects may be active so early in the year.Position: full sun or light dappled shadeSoil: gritty, poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soilRate of growth: averageFlowering period: February and March Flower colour: pale lilac to reddish purple Other features: slender, strap-shaped, grey-green...

Daffodil

A miniature trumpet daffodil with petals that open up and curl backwards, making the flower look a little like it has been grown in a wind tunnel. The other feature of this small daff is the bi-coloured flowers - white outer petals with a yellow central cup. Good for adding early spring colour to a mixed border, or pot them up and move them to a prominent position on the patio when they start to flower.Position: full sun or partial shadeSoil: well-drained soil Rate of growth: fast-growing Flowering period: March and April Flower colour: white petals and yellow cupOther features: excellent cut-flowersHardiness: fully hardyGarden care: Wearing gloves plant bulbs 10-15cm deep and 10cm apart in autumn.

English Bluebells

English bluebells are much loved for their stout spikes of bell-shaped, blue flowers in April and May. They are perfect for naturalising in a partly shaded woodland garden or underneath the canopy of deciduous trees. They quickly spread to form large clumps, so if you want to keep the numbers down in herbaceous or mixed borders, it's best to remove the faded flowerheads to prevent the plant from becoming invasive.Position: partial shadeSoil: humus-rich, moist, well-drained soilRate of growth: fast-growingFlowering period: April and MayFlower colour: BlueOther features: all parts of the plant may irritate skin on contact, and may cause severe discomfort if ingested.Hardiness: fully hardyGarden care: Plant in naturalistic drifts 10cm deep and at 10cm intervals.

Round-headed Leek

Small, egg-shaped, claret-coloured flowerheads appear like drumsticks on tall, slender stems above strap-like, mid-green leaves in mid to late summer. Planted en masse in a border in full sun, these diminutive claret flowers look great  emerging from a screen of foliage, or against a backdrop of ornamental grasses. They gently fade as summer comes to a close.Position: full sunSoil: fertile, well-drained soilRate of growth: averageFlowering period: July to AugustHardiness: fully hardyGarden care: For best effect plant the bulbs 8cm deep in natural drifts.

Avoid soils that are too wet, and split and divide large clumps in autumn or spring.

Snowdrop

This variety has been grown in the UK for around 100 years, but originates from a wide range of habitats in north-eastern Turkey and southern Russia. It can be found naturalised in forests, fields, ditches, grassy meadows as well as rocky gorges, scree and stony slopes. Because of its wide range of natural habitats, it is a pretty tough customer and can be grown just about anywhere.

It has a basal rosette of chunky green leaves that are waxy to the touch, and from their centre emerges a single stem bearing the delicate white flower which has a small green mark on the inner segments.Position:partial shade Soil: humus-rich, moist but well drained soilRate of growth: average Flowering period: January and February Flower colour: white Other features: all parts of the plant may cause a...

Delicate, soft pink, double, bowl-shaped flower, flushed with both paler and darker shades of pink in April and May.
